RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - Once again an indoor ice arena is being proposed for the area. This time it may happen.

Washoe County commissioners have approved moving ahead with an agreement that could lead to an arena.being built on a six-acre parcel in the South Valleys Regional Park on Wedge Parkway.

The agreement sets up a public-private partnership between the county and the developers--the Greater Reno Community for Ice Skating Association.

It allows the project to move ahead with a land survey and parcel map and the association to ramp up fundraising.

"It does look like this one might happen," says County Community Services Director Dave Solaro. "I think we've gotten to the point where development is occurring in the area, bringing different types of people to the area with a real need or at least a want for ice. We'll see."

No county dollars will be involved, and should the arena fail, the building, which is designed for multi-use, would revert to the county.

"So, if ice hockey is not sustainable in this area, that gets moved out and Washoe County is left with a shell of a building that we can do other indoor activities in."

No renderings have been made available, but Solaro says he believes the indoor arena could be used for hockey, figure skating and would be open to the public.
