Man shot by police after attempted traffic stop booked into jail

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) A man has has been booked into the Washoe County jail after being released from a hospital; he had been shot by a Reno Police officer January 27, 2019.

34-year-old Patrick Wootan is charged with several charges connected to the incident, including Assault on a Protected Person, Resisting a Public Officer with a Firearm, Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person, and Possession of a stolen vehicle.

The incident took place about 10 p.m. near the corner of Foster Drive and Booth Street, next to Reno High School. Police say the crime scene extended into the school's parking lot.

Police say the shooting stemmed from a traffic stop that led to the driver crashing the stolen car he was driving. He then aimed a handgun at the officer while running, and the officer fired and hit him.

The officer involved was not hurt. Since the shooting involved the Reno Police Department, the Washoe County Sheriff's Office is leading the investigation, per regional Officer-Involved Shooting Protocol. The officer is on administrative leave during the investigation.
