RENO, Nev. (KOLO) At 15 years old, Jabrion Trujillo has a lot of the same interests as a lot of kids his age. He loves sports, games, and music. But Jabrion isn’t looking for someone else his age to share in those interests. Instead, he’s looking for a family.
:"I just want a mom or a dad," he said. "Just a regular home with really nice loving parents."
His former case worker, Steve Jachimowicz, describes him as a young man who has a big heart and wants to be there for everybody else.
"He cares for others. He would give his shirt to others who are in need."
But for Jabrion, stability hasn’t been a big part of his life.
"Over the two years I have been his worker, he really hasn’t had that," Jachimowicz said. "He’s been in a treatment program or he’s been in a group home. He’s desperately for someone he can call mom and dad."
Jabrion's little sister has already been adopted, and he knows finding the perfect family won't be easy.
"It’s going to be hard because there aren’t many people out there who like older teens."
According to Jachimowicz, part of that is because of the scariness of teenagers.
"But it’s just sad to see that we have a lot of young people who have a lot of great qualities, but because of their age or the fear of teenagers, it kind of shies them away from wanting to engage with our teens."
But Jabrion has a lot of love to give. As for what he’s looking for in a family, it’s pretty simple.
"Just people who wouldn’t give up on me," he said.
He wants active parents, a mom who’s a good cook, and a love of music is a must. His future parents will also have to understand he will likely test the boundaries, at least at first.
"Whoever is interested in this young man needs to be prepared for that," Jachimowicz said. "Understand he’s going to fight back a little bit and test your boundaries. He wants to know if you are going to give up or fight through with him knowing he is going to have bad days. But that’s just my opinion, him kind of seeing if you’re always going to be there for him."
He will also need parents who can give extra time and focus when it comes to academics. But anyone who meets Jabrion instantly sees a young man with a lot of heart..
"He’s a fighter," jachimowicz said. "He doesn’t give up. He doesn’t get discouraged. When he knows that he is safe, and when he knows that he is going to get his needs met, and that he knows that people care, he tends to do a lot better."
And Jabrion has a message for anyone considering adoption.
"It doesn’t matter if I’m a teen, or anybody just the heart that they have."
