RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - A family is hoping for justice after their beloved dog Dino was stabbed and killed Sunday, March 22nd near the Truckee River in downtown Reno.
Jennifer Vandermey was enjoying an afternoon by the river with Dino leashed and alongside her when an unleashed dog approached and fought with Dino. Vandermey says after they broke up the fight, a man pulled out a knife and stabbed Dino twice before running off.
Dino attempted to walk before collapsing in front of Arlington Towers. Emergency personnel and witnesses tried everything to save him, but Dino succumbed to his injuries.
"Everyone loved him," said Vandermay of her nine-year-old dog. "You could talk to anyone who knew him, he was loved."
Christopher Buckbee, Vandermay's cousin, is leading the effort to bring some sort of justice to Dino's death.
"I didn't think somebody could do that to a dog," said Buckee. "If you know anything, if you know who this guy is. Just let us know, because this guy ran."
The family didn't get a clear look at the man, but said he's white with black hair and was wearing a white shirt and blue hat. They weren't sure if he owned the dog involved in the fight.
"We don't want this to happen to another dog," said Vandermey.
