STATELINE, NV (KOLO)-- Because of a conflict of interest, the Carson City District Attorney's Office is taking over the case of a fight that broke out at a Douglas County Commission meeting.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office says commissioners got into a fight May 16, 2019 at a meeting in Stateline.
“All parties separated on their own; only minor injuries were reported,” Undersheiff Ron Elges said.
The sheriff’s office got a report of a heated argument and that escalated into the altercation, the sheriff’s office said. There were no serious injuries in the incident.
The Douglas County District Attorney’s Office has received and reviewed the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office incident report, and says two Douglas County DA's employees were at the board meeting. Those employees were witnesses to statements made by the involved commissioners immediately after the incident. That has led to a conflict in Douglas County's DA being further involved in the investigation, and so it has referred the case to the Carson City District Attorney’s Office.
The chairman of the Douglas County Commission, meanwhile, has apologized for the fight.
Barry Penzel says, “As the Chairman of the Douglas County Board of County Commissioners, I would like to express that I regret the behavior which occurred during the Board of County Commissioners Meeting on May 16, 2019. This is not the way we wish to conduct business for the people of Douglas County. I am committed to working on settling our differences in a more appropriate manner in the future.”
