Donations sought to help Washoe County students in need

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - Communities In Schools (CIS) of Western Nevada is requesting donations for the students it serves, and their families, this holiday season.

CIS of Western Nevada provides integrated support services to 4,300 students in eight Washoe County schools, where close to all CIS students fall below the poverty line. The nonprofit’s mission is to provide each student with the proper resources to graduate, even during the holiday break.

Several local businesses have partnered with the nonprofit to ensure students in need are not forgotten during the holiday season. Great Basin Federal Credit Union has begun spreading Christmas cheer with its third-annual giving tree at its south Reno location on S. Virginia Street. The community is encouraged to choose a tag off the tree with a student’s name and age on it, and purchase gifts, clothes, hygiene products and gift cards for their student. Donations are due to the branch by Friday, Dec. 14.

Additionally, Renown Health is adopting students and their families at all eight Washoe County schools served by CIS Western Nevada. Each department is gathering food and gifts, so CIS Western families can enjoy a warm holiday meal and gifts around the tree this Christmas.

CIS Western Nevada is collecting new shoes and Walmart gift cards to distribute to families in need. If you are interested in making a donation, or adopting a student this holiday season, please contact Executive Director Auburn Harrison at 775.846.0250 or auburn@cisnevada.org.
