AUBURN, Calif. (KOLO)-- The Placer County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday it has found credit card skimming devices that steal credit card numbers inside gas pumps in the Auburn area.

It advised people who bought gas in the area to monitor bank accounts and credit card statements for fraudulent activity.

“The skimmers are embedded inside gas dispensers, making it impossible to know from the outside that the dispenser has been compromised,” the sheriff’s office said.

The thieves will often use stolen numbers to buy gift cards at retail stores. The sheriff’s office recommended people use credit cards at gas pumps to make it harder to steal information instead of debit cards with PIN numbers.
