I-80 at Wadsworth fully back open after big rig fire

WADSWORTH, NV (KOLO) - I-80 is fully back open eastbound at Wadsworth, east of Sparks, after a big rig fire Monday.

The road was at least partially closed almost 24 hours.

The truck carrying used automobile batteries caught fire the evening of May 6, 2019. No one was hurt, but a crew from hazardous materials cleanup company remained on scene Tuesday afternoon, removing batteries one by one to make sure no acid spilled onto the road. The batteries and truck have since been removed.

The Nevada Highway Patrol says the truck driver heard a loud pop shortly before 6PM Monday and assumed he had a flat tire. He got out of the cab and saw the fire, and used his fire extinguisher, which wasn't enough to fight the fire. A Good Samaritan pulled over, also with an extinguisher, but that also wasn't enough.

Crews from Pyramid Fire, North Lyon Fire and Truckee Meadows Fire helped fight the fire; the cause has not been determined. The truck fire led to a small brush fire.

NHP says the auto batteries were being taken to Southern California.
