After Christmas, free Christmas tree recycling is available throughout Northern Nevada, the Nevada Department of Environmental Protection reports.
Recycled trees are made into mulch and used for park weed abatement programs. Some locations offer it free to residents.

Reno-Sparks:Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful has recycled more than 159,000 trees since 2003. Drop off locations are Rancho San Rafael Park, Bartley Ranch Park, and Shadow Mountain Sports Complex or one of the following Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District stations at 1240 East Lake Blvd., New Washoe City, 500 Rockwell Blvd., Spanish Springs or 130 Nectar St. in Lemmon Valley. The Boy Scouts will pick up trees Saturday, Dec. 28, and Saturday, Jan. 4, for a $15 donation. More details at Scouts4Trees.com. Incline Village: Waste Management will do free curbside collection Jan. 13 to Jan 17 for Incline Village and Crystal Bay customers alone. Trees must be cut into 3-foot segments. People can also drop off trees at Preston field from Dec. 23 to Jan. 27. Carson City: Curbside collection will be Dec. 26 to Jan. 16. Trees must be in 6-foot sections or shorter. They will be picked up on regular trash days. There will also be drop-off bins at the Carson City Public Works Yard on Airport Road between East Fifth Street and Butti Way, the Waste Management parking lot at 5560 Sheep Drive and the Carson City Landfill green waste pile. After January 15, take trees to the landfill. Trees left curbside after Jan. 15 will not be collected. Douglas County: There will be curbside pickup of trees on regular trash days from Jan. 6 to Jan. 10 in the Tahoe Township and Carson Valley. Trees must be in 6-foot sections or smaller. Douglas County residents can also drop off their trees at Lampe Park, 1324 Waterloo Lane in Gardnerville, from Dec. 26 to Jan. 24. Storey County: The Storey County Fire Protection District, with Public Works and Storey County Volunteer Fire Department, will recycle Christmas trees for Storey County residents. Drop off trees from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Dec. 26 to Jan. 10 at public works, at fire stations or at the the Mark Twain Community Center. Fernley: Drop off trees Dec. 26 to Jan. 10 in the dirt lot behind the rodeo arena at Out of Town Park at Farm District Road and U.S. 50). Questions: 775-784-9914.
