Celebs invade Tahoe for American Century Championship

STATELINE, NV (KOLO) Our crew caught up with a handful of golfers at Lake Tahoe's American Century Championship Golf Tournament who say they are thrilled to spend some time here in our home.

“Man, Tahoe, look at this, you got snow-covered mountains, you got beautiful water, pine trees, you got Mark Mulder over here, you got me... what more could you ask for?” asks comedian Larry the Cable Guy.

“When I played, I never went to Tahoe and I never went to Wine Country. I just didn't. I was so focused on playing, but now I'm coming up here quite often because it's really nice,” former NBA Sacramento Kings star Doug Christie exclaims.

“I look forward to coming here every year... it’s hot as hell everywhere else in the country, but its perfect here,” NBA Hall of Fame forward Charles Barkley says.

“Its fantastic here... not only the setting. It’s so beautiful here; I grew up in California but I've never been to Lake Tahoe before so it’s been fantastic,” ESPN commentator Jay Bilas adds.

Edgewood Golf Course serves as the hub, Lake Tahoe is the backdrop, and supporting non-profits is the reason golfers attend.

“The fact that they've raised more than 5 million dollars for charity and they devote 40 percent of their profits to cancer research; that's been over 1.4 billion dollars. I'm blown away by that. That kind of commitment... people talk about that kind of commitment but American Century... they make it,” Bilas states. He is referring to the tournament's beneficiary, The Stowers Institute for Medical Research.

Other non-profits include the Lake Tahoe Fire Relief Fund, United Negro College Fund and the Boys and Girls Club. The tournament features more than 80 entertainers, athletes, journalists and the resident comedian.

“You know what Tahoe is really known for... good boogers! I mean it's dry air out here, I mean every 3rd person's got their fingers in their nose, I've never seen anything like it, Larry the Cable Guy jokes.
