Carson City awarded Paving for Pizza grant

CARSON CITY, NV (KOLO) - Residents who nominated Carson City for a $5,000 grant through the Domino’s Paving for Pizza campaign have succeeded, with the Capital City winning the grant, and being the only Nevada city considered for it.

Paving for Pizza is a nationwide initiative to award funds to nominated cities to fill potholes. Carson City Public Works "proudly accepts this award and is honored to be chosen based on the thoughtful nominations submitted by Carson City’s residents," according to a city statement.

Carson City Public Works Director Darren Schulz says, “While the grant is highly appreciated and needed, it is the residents who nominated Carson City that deserve our fullest gratitude. Having our residents taking the initiative to do what they can to improve our streets speaks highly of our city. Every little bit counts in terms of street funding and Public Works is committed to stretching every dollar as far as possible.”

The Public Works Streets Division will begin filling potholes with the awarded funds May 14, 2019.

Pothole filling will take place in several locations around the city. Current scheduled locations are in the area of Mark Twain Elementary School on Slide Mountain.

People who nominated Carson City are encouraged to join Public Works at the Slide Mountain pothole near Mark Twain Elementary at 1:30 p.m. May 14, for a group photo and to allow staff to show appreciation for their nomination and consideration.

According to the city's statement, "Severe wet cold weather conditions diminish streets ultimately causing cracks or erosion. Prioritization of street repair is a process facilitated based on assessment, schedules, and funding. Unlike general scheduled street repair, potholes and other road deterioration problems are reviewed one case at a time. Residents are encouraged to report potholes using the Carson City Connect app or by visiting the site at carson.org/connect. Carson City Connect is the best method for reporting street concerns or conditions. The Streets Division will receive the report and will dispatch personnel to the area for assessment."
