The American Red Cross of Northern Nevada and Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints volunteers practiced creating neighborhood emergency evacuation centers at LDS church buildings Saturday in Carson City.

They helped open Red Cross shelters in two area neighborhoods.

It trains LDS members how to open Red Cross shelters.

"We are pleased to be able to make these buildings available to our neighbors as places of respite and refuge in times of distress," President David W. Haws of the Carson City LDS Nevada Stake said in a statement from the Red Cross.

This training is the final step in a six-month effort to have two LDS church buildings added to the list of available short-term shelters used by Reno's emergency operations center.

Other LDS buildings will be considered for the list of those available in an emergency.
