Buying kids' items at discounted prices at JBF Reno

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) -- It takes a lot of work to go through the 41,000 items that are being tagged and will soon be for sale at the Just Between Friends sale at the Reno-Sparks Livestock Events Center. This place has just about everything parents with little kids could need.

"I've bought all of my car seats here, all of my big equipment, shoes, clothing, toys for Christmas," says Miriam Zavala. "I mean, everything; you find it all."

Zavala is a local mother of two. She started going to the consignment sale 8 years ago when her oldest daughter was just a baby. She says, over the years, she has saved thousands of dollars.

Some of the items at the sale are new. Most are gently used by local families who have taken stuff to the Events Center to sell for the event. Every item is closely inspected. Volunteers say they check on all the recalls and anything that's been recalled won't make it onto the shelves.

"We thoroughly go through everything," says Jillian Dudo, a volunteer at the event. "So when you come here you know you're getting good quality clean items."

And at major discounts. Dudo says the prices are between 50 to 90 percent off of retail prices.

Zavala agrees.

"For example, I bought an infant seat and we're talking a $300 car seat. I paid 80 dollars out of the box!" she says.

"This is the best way to find everything you need for your family at rock bottom prices because raising kids is hard and it's expensive and buying stuff new at all the stores, it's going to cost you an arm and a leg," says Vicki Dame, owner of Just Between Friends Reno.

While Zavala started off as just another parent who shopped at Just Between Friends, she has gone on to becoming someone who also volunteers and sells her items at the consignment sale. And she loves telling other moms about the event, which is held twice a year in Reno.

"It makes me feel great because you're almost doing others a service," says Zavala. "Just knowing how much you can save - and if they're to come back the next sale and sell their own stuff and know that they're going to get a big fat check at the end, that's amazing."

Just Between Friends runs from Friday to Sunday at the Reno-Sparks Livestock Events Center. Admission Friday and Saturday is $3, with the money going to Women and Children's Center of the Sierra. Sunday, admission is free.
