Target shooting blamed for Lyon County fire

STAGECOACH, NV (KOLO)-- The Bureau of Land Management says a brush fire east of Dayton Sunday was caused by target shooters.

BLM fire investigators say multiple people reported the fire, and it's not clear whether any of them were also involved in the shooting.

The Fort Churchill Fire that started May 26, 2019 was originally thought to be 400 to 500 acres based on a ground estimate, but a flyover reduced that to the lower number, with containment achieved Monday, according to information from Sierra Front and Lyon County.

No structures were threatened and no injuries were reported.

The fire burned south of Stagecoach off Caroline Way in cheat grass and medium sagebrush.

The Nevada Division of Forestry and Bureau of Land Management assisted Central Lyon County fight the fire, which was reported early the afternoon of May 26. 2019.

BLM says this is the third target shooting-related fire in its jurisdiction so far in 2019, with the first two being very small in the Sun Valley area.
