Book Drive helps local kids

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) -- You can give the gift of reading by simply donating a book you already have in your home.

Spread the Word Nevada is holding the 2019 Spring Clean Community Book Drive. It runs until March 31, 2019. All you have to do to participate is drop off gently-used books at one of the three drop-off locations in the Truckee Meadows.

Drop off locations include:
-Scheels - 1200 Scheels Drive, Sparks
-Biomat USA - 652 E Prater Way, Sparks
-Learning Express - 197 Damonte Ranch Pkwy D, Reno

"One book can be that entry way to get a child to love to read, to love to learn; it could change the way they think about themselves," says MacKenzie Cortez, Program Coordinator for Spread the Word Nevada Washoe County. "A big part of our mission is we change lives one book at a time."

Spread the Word Nevada is hoping to collect enough books during the book drive to hand out to kids this summer when school is not in session. It plans to give out the books to kids participating in local summer programs. During the school year, the nonprofit is able to give books to kids during its Breakfast with Books and Snacks with Books events at local elementary schools. Right now, the organization has partnerships with Greenbrae Elementary School and Cannan Elementary School.

"We have volunteers who will clean them up and get them ready to go to our kids," says Cortez.

While Spread the Word Nevada has been operating since 2001 in Southern Nevada, it just expanded to Washoe County last year. Many of its books come from book drives, which can also be organized by community members. Earlier this winter, the students at Pine Middle School organized a school-wide book drive and were able to collect thousands of books to be given to local elementary students in Washoe County.

Spread the Word Nevada is a 2019 KOLOCares Pillar Partner.
