TAHOE CITY, Calif. (KOLO)-- A boater died after a dinghy tipped over along the North Shore of Lake Tahoe on Wednesday, the North Tahoe Fire Protection District reported.

The incident happened about 11:15 a.m. near Agate Bay Community Pier. The dinghy tipped over about 100 feet to 150 feet from shore.

Crews swam out to the victim and dived to rescue the victim about 15 feet under the water.

A firefighter brought the victim to the surface and the U.S. Coast Guard helped bring the victim to the shore. The victim was in cardiac arrest and paramedics could not revive the victim, the district reported.

The district noted 96 percent of drowning victims do not wear life jackets and warned that even in late summer the waters of Lake Tahoe can be cold enough to incapacitate swimmers.
