Axe hurling comes to Reno

RENO, NV (KOLO) Time to channel your inner Thor. In case you've ever just wanted to throw an ax at something, a new business in downtown Reno is ready to satisfy that urge. The Reno Axe Bar on Sierra Street is officially open for business.

Owner Phil Frayssinoux got the idea during a trip to Canada, where the sport has been growing in popularity for the past few years. He enjoyed the experience so much, he decided to bring it home to Reno.

"Reno is getting big from an experience standpoint," he said. "It’s getting really exciting to see that Reno can compete with big cities from an experience standpoint."

Frayssinoux is no stranger to bringing unique experiences to Reno. He started the area’s first escape room, and below the Axe Bar is another experience called 'Dark Pursuit'; an escape maze that preys on your fears. Creating unique experiences is something Frayssinoux is passionate about.

"When you try unique experiences, whatever the cost is, the value of it keeps growing over time," he said.

Axe-throwing is certainly in that category. It may take you a handful of tries, but when you get that first bulls eye, the thrill becomes addicting.

However, it’s not all just fun and games. Because you are throwing dangerous weapons, certain safety procedures are in place. That includes a two-drink limit while throwing axes, and there is only a handful of acceptable ways throw them. Bouncers are also on hand to make sure people don't become too unruly.

Still, Frayssinoux believes this is a perfect place for anyone to just have a good time.

"Having food here, having drinks here, having a couple of unique experiences, I think it can be a good spot really for a couple different crowds."

Reno Axe Bar is open to people as young as ten with appropriate supervision, of course. It is next to Liberty Food and Wine. For more information, click here.
