Trial date continued for suspect in four Northern Nevada murders

WASHOE COUNTY, Nev. (KOLO) - The trial for the man accused of four murders in Northern Nevada in January 2019 has been continued.

Wilber Martinez-Guzman was set to be tried in April 2020, but his attorneys argued they would not be ready in time, and requested to move the trial to February 2021.

Judge Connie Steinheimer set a new trial date of August 31, 2020.

The judge also set a hearing for July 27, 2020 on an expected motion from the defense arguing Martinez-Guzman's mental capacity should make him ineligible for the death penalty.

The ruling comes on the one year anniversary of the death of Sophia Renken, one of the four victims in the murder spree.
