The shooting took place in the 600 block of Lester Avenue just west of Kietzke Lane about 6:09 p.m. August 8, 2018. Police say a Sparks Police Department detective assigned to the Regional Crime Suppression Unit was among a group of detectives outside a home to arrest 40-year-old Joseph Richards for sexual assault of a minor. Police say Richards armed himself with a large knife and moved toward the detectives, leading the Sparks detective to fire his gun at Richards. Detectives administered first aid and Richards was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

No one else was hurt.

Richards has been booked on charges of Sexual Assault of a Minor Under 14 years old, Lewdness with a Minor Under 14 years old, and Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Police Officer.

The detective, whose name also has not been released, has been placed on administrative leave. The Reno Police Department and Washoe County Sheriff’s Office are conducting the investigation in accordance with the regional Officer-Involved Shooting protocol, since it was a Sparks PD detective who fired the shot.
