Police say man shot by Sparks officers showed a gun

Reno Police say a man shot and killed by Sparks Police showed a gun and was shot while still in his car.

The shooting happened on Richards Way at First Street near the Sparks Recreation Center late the morning of July 28, 2016.

The incident started to unfold about 10:42AM. Police say 41-year-old Jorge Moreno-Aguirre of Sparks was reported speeding and driving his Jeep the wrong way in the neighborhood, and hitting several other vehicles. Police say when they stopped him, he showed a gun and refused their instructions, and they shot him.

Officers pulled him from the Jeep and started administering CPR, but he died at the scene. Police say while they were conducting first aid, they saw a second gun hidden in a pants pocket.

According to a statement from Reno Police, the lead agency in this investigation, "The information Reno Police Detectives have received from speaking to witnesses and the Officers involved was corroborated by the Sparks PD patrol vehicle camera that captured the events between the Officers and Moreno. The video is part of this still active investigation and will not be immediately available for viewing."

No Sparks officers were hurt. Those involved have been placed on administrative leave, per policy in such cases.
