RENO, NV (KOLO) A ten-year-old boy is recovering after he fell and cut his head open on Peavine Mountain. The call came in at about 4:10 p.m. Friday.

The boy was hiking with his mother and three siblings up to the N by the University of Nevada, Reno.

The Reno Fire Department responded and used its UTV, which is its new sport utility vehicle.

Battalion Chief Mike Pilcher says crews would not have been able to get up to the boy in any other vehicle.

Pilcher says the boy was in stable condition, conscious, but shaken up.

RFD says if you plan to hike make sure to always take a cell phone, plenty of water and let someone know where you are going.
