Building destroyed, home damaged in fire
Truckee Meadows Fire crews responded to a structure fire call on Axe Handle Canyon Road just after 11 a.m. Sunday, November 20, 2016. Battalion Chief Mike Heikka says the outbuilding involved was a structure that housed falcons and was fully involved when crews arrived.
First responders say winds were pushing the fire towards the home and crews focused on saving that structure. They say the heat from the fire broke several windows and damaged the outside of the building, but the home is habitable.
Five engines and extra water tenders were called in to make sure there was enough water due to the lack of fire hydrants in that area. Crews were also concerned about winds spreading the fire and wanted to make sure there was plenty of water available.
The cause is believed to be an electrical short but it's still under investigation. It's unclear how many birds were harmed in the fire.
