Summer Farm Camp for children ages 5 through 10 begins June 10 and runs through August 16 at Rancho San Rafael Regional Park. Young Farmer Summer Camp (students ages 11 through 15) begins June 10 through August 9 at the Urban Teaching Farm on 1700 E 2nd Street.

Students can be registered for as little as one week or all available weeks. Each week provides campers a new lesson, ranging from farm animal understanding and soil identification to the exploration of art and engineering through garden discussions. Hours run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. but parents who require added flexibility can extend the day’s hours to 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for $25 per week. Locally-sourced hot lunches are available for purchase from Farm Fresh Catering.

“Our summer camps are immersion experiences with learning opportunities that may not be available elsewhere,” says Fayth Ross, executive director of Urban Roots. “The outdoor environment coupled with fun, unique experiences have a powerful effect on our campers’ ability to retain what they’re learning, so spots tend to go quickly. We love growing our campers’ minds in healthy, exploratory ways.”

Parents are provided with a weekly email to continue engaging their children in camp subjects after they’ve finished the week’s curriculum.

Outside Farm Camp, Urban Roots offers farm school sessions for home schoolers and Garden Classrooms (gardens built in and with accompanying curriculum at schools in the Washoe County School District). In 2019, the organization is on a mission to provide every third grader in the district with an opportunity to take a field trip to their Urban Teaching Farm.
