Non-profits see increase in year-end donations

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) -- Many donors have flooded donation centers in the Reno-Sparks area with things others can use.

The Goodwill near Oddie Boulevard and Silverada Boulevard reports seeing an increase in donations by 50%.

"People getting ready to clean out the house, bring new stuff in for Christmas. It's kind of a spring cleaning in the winter time," said Shannon Broussard, store manager.

Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada reports a 15% increase in daily donations, which equates to 30 additional donations per day.

"With the majority of it going towards programs at Catholic Charities that are moving families from poverty to sustainability," said spokesman Matt Vaughan.

With the end of the year here, some donors are looking to get a tax break from donating.

Even with the increase, both charities are always looking for a wide array of donations ranging from food, household items and clothing.
