'Winter Wonderland' event benefiting Nevada Diabetes Association

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - The Nevada Diabetes Association (NDA) hosted a free diabetes prescreening at the Atlantis Thursday morning.

Organizers hoped to educate and raise awareness about the disease. There were also health experts on hand to answer any questions.

According to NDA’s Sarah Gleich every 17 seconds someone is diagnosed with diabetes. “If people are educated and we advocate for them, they can probably see the signs and symptoms and maybe go to a health care provider and have a conversation.”

She added, “Twenty percent of the population has some form of diabetes and do not even know it. That can lead to long term complications, if you nip it in the bud today and get the tools and do the work, those complications won’t be such a risk factor anymore.”

The prescreening is a kick off to NDA’s Winter Wonderland event Thursday night. The Atlantis said the event features seasonal cocktails paired with gourmet bites from more than 30 local restaurants, including Bistro Napa, Café de Thai, Napa Sonoma, South Creek Pizza, and more.

Every dollar raised for the event will go back into the organization.

“Every dollar stays right here in the community and we want to have a program and service for anybody affected by diabetes. These programs and fundraisers are huge for us. They help send our little ones to camp and also our medical emergency programs to keep people alive,” said Gleich.

The Winter Wonderland event starts at 6 p.m. and is $60 at the door.
