RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - The Salvation Army in Reno, with help from several local businesses and agencies, hosted its 22nd annual Feed the Hungry at the Reno Events Center on Tuesday, January 28, 2020. The event gives a free meal for the homeless and anyone in the community in need of a hot meal.
"We just want to extend that hand of love and hope," Major Darren Trimmer, Washoe County Coordinator for The Salvation Army said.
The charity said it provided 1,020 meals and had 175 volunteers help at this year's event. Organizers said Feed the Hungry is also about letting those in need know they are not alone.
Ashley Pastorius, who attended the event, said "it makes me feel happy and really special."
For some of the event's volunteers, the annual feed hits home.
"I have and have had a lot of family that has been homeless in their life so it's just a nice way to give back from experiences in my family," Eyan Pearson, a volunteer, said.
Those who attended Feed the Hungry also walked out with a goodie bag, which included a hat, socks, toiletry bag, and a chocolate bar. These bags were provided by the Safari Club International/Sportsmen Against Hunger.
Providing a warm meal is just one of the ways The Salvation Army hopes to combat the homeless crisis in Northern Nevada.
"We help with rental assistance, we help with electricity, we help with food boxes, we have daily deliveries of bread which people can come and get, so we're working the best we can to help those who are in need every day," Major Trimmer said.
The charity also has a drug and alcohol treatment program for men on the streets. But Major Trimmer adds, "We need to be able to sit down with city leaders and find a need, obviously the need is homeless, but find out what else the community has and how the salvation army can help."
The Salvation Army is one of the world’s most trusted organizations when it comes to helping people in need. The organization has served Northern Nevada since 1884 and Reno since 1889. The Salvation Army in Washoe County operates a food bank, provides emergency utility assistance, rental assistance, dental needs and many more services to help local families in crisis throughout the year.
The organization is always in need of volunteers all year long to help continue its mission. For more information on how you can contribute, click here.
