Original Story: Having a loved one diagnosed with cancer is never easy and it's a lot tougher when that loved one is a parent.

Camp Kesem is a national organization supporting kids whose lives have been impacted by a parent's diagnosis.

Students from the University of Nevada, Reno are working to create a local chapter right here in Reno.

"I've been there for three years since my sophomore year of high school and after I left to go to college, it was my dream to start one here," said UNR student Adam Thomas.

The organization is run by college students through donations and fundraisers, they provide a week long summer camp for kids.

"I was able to have fun, relax and make new friends," explained Thomas. "It was a great experience and I wanted to bring that into Reno."

The closest summer camps are in Las Vegas, California and Arizona, so UNR student Autumn Kidd said there is a huge need to have one in Northern Nevada.

"He posted it onto social media and I researched it myself," said Kidd. "I've personally been affected by a loved one with cancer. I've never had this resource before and I've never heard of it."

Only the top five schools with the most votes get a chance at being selected for a local camp.

Thomas and Kidd are hoping to gather 10,000 votes and help kids in our community.

"Going to camp, it was honestly an awesome experience," added Thomas. "I was just able to forget everything else that was happening in my life."

Tabling will take place all week on campus.

On Tuesday and Thursday, tabling will take place at the William Pennington Student Center.

Tabling on Wednesday and Friday will take place at the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center.

The last day to vote is Friday, January 31st, 2020 at 5 pm.
