RENO, Nev. (KOLO) -- The Women and Children’s Center of the Sierra provides services to support women as they work to move out of poverty and improve their lives. Throughout the year, the nonprofit offers free education and support classes to moms as they strive to transform their lives.
The organization, located at 3905 Neil Road, Suite #2 in Reno, offers ESL and GED (HiSET) education, job search and preparation classes. WACCS also provides a Mommy and Me class, a life skills and support group, and even Zumba classes.
“There are no men in the room, no mirrors, no judgement, if you have your kids, they're in there dancing with you, so it's just a place to come and let out your stress free of charge, we do not charge the moms,” Angelica Garcia, Outreach Coordinator and Bilingual Advocate for WACCS said.
GED classes are offered Mondays from 9:45 to 11 a.m. and 1:15 to 2:45 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
ESL classes are offered Tuesdays from 4 to 5 p.m., Wednesdays from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. and 4 to 5 p.m., and Fridays from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
Bringing your child or children to the classes is completely acceptable and welcomed at WACCS.
If you do not wish to participate in the different programs, but want to still help out the organization, there are volunteer opportunities available. The organization is always looking for volunteers to help be teachers for the classes, to entertain kids during the classes, or help with organization at the center.
Monetary and physical donations are also accepted at any time. WACCS is always in need of items mothers need, including diapers, cleaning supplies, clothing, old plates and utensils, books, canned goods, and more.
