First responder agencies compete for blood donations

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - First responders will battle for bragging rights Wednesday and its all for a good cause. Law enforcement, firefighters, and first responders will battle head to head to see who can garner the most blood donations.

They teamed up with Vitalant for the 3rd annual Battle of the Badges at the Greater Nevada Field.

According to Jackson Gaskins Communication Manager for the Aces blood drive participants can mention who they would like to support at each blood drive – either “Team Fire,” “Team First Responders” (EMTs/Paramedics) or “Team Law.” Participants will also receive a limited-edition ‘Battle of the Badges’ T-shirt and Aces swag.

Gaskins said every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. “Summer is a very challenging season to collect blood due to many reasons including high schools and colleges – the site of many blood drives – on break and routine donors away on vacation,” said Gaskins.

Gaskins said last year Team Fire won, but all together the blood drive drew in 80 participants which potentially saved 240 people.

The blood drive is from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
