Licensed Therapists needed at Kids & Horses

MiNDEN, Nev. -(KOLO) Organizers say their increased client load has created a waiting list and the Kolo Cares Pillar Partner is putting out a call for more licensed therapists.

Tucked away in Minden is a rare gem. A non-profit that helps Nevadans with disabilities through the use of therapy horses.

"It's just amazing, I can't imagine working somewhere where you get the beauty of the area, the reward of the kids making so much growth, and the interaction between the kids and the horses, it’s wonderful," Annie Struemph explains. She is a Licensed Occupational Therapist for Kids and Horses.

It serves both adults and children. Struemph mainly works with children who may be suffering from Autism, Epilepsy, Dyslexia or other disorders. She adds that the growth she's witnessed over the last year and half has been spectacular to watch, “Kids who have any language delays, they are motivated to get better, to say the words and communicate more clearly.”

Struemph credits much of the success of clients in large part to her four legged assistants. It takes a special animal to be a therapeutic horse, a lot of the horses here are former ranch horses and show horses that still have a lot to give. Here in Minden, they receive intense training to be able to handle the unique needs of every client.

“They have to have the right personality, we work with them here so they can respond appropriately to toys...noises, things being passed over their heads,” Struemph tells us.

Kids and Horses has around 60 clients. As word gets out about the program, the non-profit now has a waiting list and needs more therapists to join the staff. There are many open time slots between 8am to 5pm. The therapists have flexible schedules, as they work in other locations in our area.

"It’s a treatment tool that you really can't compete with," she states. Progress and sustainability. There's an immense amount of joy, using your skills to help others.
