Man arrested for fleeing the scene of an accident after witness follows suspect

SPARKS, Nev. (KOLO) - Update at 11:41 a.m.: A man has been arrested on charges of fleeing the scene of an accident and driving without a license after police say a witness followed him and reported his location to police.

When the Sparks Police Department arrived on scene, they found a victim laying in the roadway on Glendale west of 21st. The victim was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

A witness to the crash followed the suspect into Reno and updated Sparks police as to his location. Officers then arrived in Reno and contacted the suspect.

23-year-old Johnathan Ayala-Chavez was subsequently arrested and booked into the Washoe County Jail.

Police say their initial investigation and interviews with witnesses revealed that Ayala-Chavez was driving west on Glendale just after the intersection of 21st when he struck the pedestrian that was in the roadway.

Police say that at the time of the crash, there was a man on a moped that was in the area. Sparks police say they would like to speak to this individual, or anyone else who may have witnessed the crash.

Anyone with information regarding this crash is asked to call the Sparks Police Department or Secret Witness.

Update at 10:55 a.m.: The Sparks Police Department says the pedestrian injured in the crash is in critical condition, although their injuries are not life-threatening.

Original Article: Glendale Avenue was closed after a crash early Friday. It happened around 5:30 a.m. at 21st Street. A pedestrian was reportedly hit.

There is no estimated time of reopening.
