Galena fire progress stopped; one home burned
RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - Update on Monday at 12:50 p.m.: The Joy Lake Fire has been 80% contained, with full containment expected by 6:00 p.m. Officials urge people to avoid the area of Snow Flower Drive.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
7:10 P.M. UPDATE Fire crews have stopped the Joy Lake Fire from advancing, Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue reported.
Fire crews are making good progress.
A home on Snow Flower Drive was burned.
Evacuees who need a place to stay can go to the back parking lot of Galena High School.
Crews will remain on scene throughout the night to monitor the area.
All evacuation orders have been lifted.
6:30 P.M. UPDATE: Truckee Meadows Fire &Rescue Chief Charlie Moore said one structure has been “impacted” by the Joy Lake Road Fire Sunday, but he did not know the extent.
Several structures remain threatened and there are evacuations recommended in the south Galena Forest area.
The incident involved two fires, Moore said. About 3 acres are burning.
Joy Lake Road is closed except for people who live there.
6:03 P.M. UPDATE: Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue said the Joy Lake Fire is about 3 acres.
Several structures are threatened in the southern part of the Galena Forest.
Evacuations are recommended for east of Austrian Pines, south of Piney Creek and north of Joy Lake Road.
There are 15 fire engines on scene and six aircraft are attacking the fire.
ORIGINAL STORY: Crews are responding to a fire in the area of Joy Lake Road south of the Mount Rose Highway.
The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office is blocking roads to keep people out of the area.
