RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - Reno Police Chief Jason Soto will be retiring at the end of the year.

In a letter to the department, Soto said after more than 25 years he wants to focus on family and future plans.

Soto began his career at the Reno Police Department (RPD) in 1997. He was named interim chief in 2015 following the retirement of then-chief Steve Pitts. At the time, he didn’t meet the minimum qualifications outlined in city law to hold the position. He was given two years to meet those requirements and was then given the role permanently in 2018.

He also served as acting city manager from April until October of 2020 until the current city manager, Doug Thornley, was sworn in.

In today’s letter, Soto says recruitment for the next Chief of Police will take place over the coming months with the intention of a transition happening by January 2023.
