RENO, Nev. (KOLO) -A brush fire sent black smoke into the skies Friday afternoon that could be seen from all around the Truckee Meadows, but the Reno Fire Department was able to extinguish it quickly once fire crews reached it.

The fire near the former Manogue High School on McCarran Boulevard between Greg and Mill streets was reported around 4:30 p.m.

A campfire at a homeless camp got into the debris and brush and started the fire, the fire department said.

Fire crews had difficulty reaching the fire, but once they did the fire was quickly extinguished.

The fire department said winds were light Friday afternoon. If the fire happened a day or two earlier it likely would have burned several acres.

That area gets fires from homeless camps almost weekly, the fire department said.
