RTC and Lahontan Audubon Society launch new bus program
The program is called Birding By Bus.
RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - RTC and The Lahontan Audubon Society recently launched the Birding By Bus program.
The program invites the community to view an online map to enjoy popular bird-watching locations in area parks, using public transportation to reach them.
According to RTC the local parks are easily accessible by RIDE bus stops or are within walking distance from the stops. The society’s Parker Flickinger said the program has a dozen spots in Reno-Sparks. He said it encourages birding for people who don’t have access to personal vehicles or are unable to drive.
Flickinger said since the pandemic birdwatching has become a popular activity. “A big thing about it is education and natural education.”
He continued, “As an educator myself, I have seen how this can help people inspire people, by exploring the parks in our backyard and being able to recognize that’s an American Robin or that’s a Red Tail Hawk.”
Each park on the Birding By Bus map is marked with interactive and information symbols about the park’s features and birding opportunities.
