RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - The hallway in Mary Ann Lambert’s Reno home is covered with the ribbons and awards won by generations of her canine companions. She guides you through all those years of shows and competitions much like a proud parent recounting the achievements of a son or daughter.

“I don’t have kids. They’re it.” she laughs.

This was never the aim when--years ago--she adopted an abused rescue dog. “I got her and started into dog sports. I didn’t know what I was doing, but she liked agility, so I started with agility.”

And so, it became a hobby. That led to a succession of dogs--all standard schnauzers--who did well in various competitions, including confirmation dog shows. And that family history of success led to this guy, officially registered as Sentry Moonshadow Sundance, but answering to “Redford.” That name is no accident. Living in Salt Lake City for ten years and skiing at nearby Sundance, she encountered the movie star and he left an impression.

“I would see him on the ski hill. And the way he’s conducted himself in his life besides the fact he’s drop-dead gorgeous, I’ve always liked him.”

It turns out her three-and-a-half-year-old Schnauzer wears the name well.

“He goes in the ring and he knows he’s on the show. He stands and presents himself well. He’s not just a pretty face. He’s smart. He learns quickly and he’s obedient when he has to be, but he can be a little mischievous.”

Two other Schnauzers share this home with her, but the star of this piece isn’t here at the moment. He’s out working the circuit in the company of his handlers and doing well. So well, that she recently got an unexpected call from Redford’s handlers.

“And I said hello and I heard somebody screaming. And I said ‘What’s going on? Is Redford OK? And I heard ‘Yes and we’re going to Westminster.”

And so, this weekend, as a nation of dog lovers tune in from afar, Mary Ann will be the anxious, proud owner cheering from the stands. Some of us here at home will be pulling for him too.

“It’ll be fun. I’m looking forward to it, but I’m also scared to death.”
