RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - It’s no secret that one of the most popular New Year’s resolutions is exercising more.

“People’s health needs to be a big priority right now, mental health and physical health so exercise is huge for both of those.”

Donnie Ochampaugh, Co-Owner of Wolf Valley Performance

Donnie Ochampaugh and Stacey Rikalo are the owners of Wolf Valley Performance, a CrossFit gym located at 770 Smithridge Dr. #700 in Reno. They stress that if you want to focus on fitness in 2021, setting achievable expectations is the answer.

“We’re really big on building habits over time,” Ochampaugh said, “We don’t want people to jump in on January 1st and make these huge life changes and then kind of fall off a few weeks later.”

“Progress not perfect, have fun doing it, and find some people to do it with you.”

January is typically a pretty busy time for gyms and fitness centers. Right now in Nevada, there is a 25% capacity limit on the industry. However, the owners at Wolf Valley Performance say the community’s support and the urge for people to want to live a healthier lifestyle is what’s keeping their doors open.

Rikalo added, “They’ve been so, so supportive of us and really honestly vocal with us too about wanting to support us through this.”

Despite opening their gym two years ago and having to navigate a global health crisis, Rikalo and Ochampaugh say business has been steadily growing and they’re optimistic about what the new year will bring.

“Really we’re just hoping that the pandemic can get more under control and we can just get some more people in and help as many people as we can because right now we’re kind of limited with that.,” Ochampaugh said.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner or you’re experienced. What matters is putting your health and happiness first.

“Take it one day at a time, one thing at a time, and try to find ways of doing it that you genuinely enjoy,” Rikalo said.

The owners say CrossFit is for anyone of all skill levels and strength and can be modified to fit your needs. To learn more about CrossFit at Wolf Valley Performance, click here.
