RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - On Friday the family of a 12 year old boy held a vigil for the death of their son.

Hundreds of family and friends packed Berrum Ln. to remember the boy.

“Being out here and showing all the love - all of the support - of everyone coming out, it just shows how much love this community has in times like this," said Theresa Moreno, the boy’s mother.

On September 18, Moreno’s son was found dead close to the same spot where supporters held Friday’s vigil. While this past week has been a nightmare, Moreno has pushed through because of an outpouring of support.

“My son was loved," Moreno said. "The community came together, and my family and friends have traveled miles to be here. They came from California - they came from all over - just to show their love and support. Without the community and without the love and support I wouldn’t be holding up (Friday).”

There were songs, people came up to the microphone to tell their favorite stories, and supporters enjoyed a slideshow of the boy’s life. The hour and a half long observance gave people who didn not know him very well a chance to see how many lives he touched.

“My son was loving, my son was full of energy, and he’s resting in peace while full of energy," Moreno said of her son. "He’s been through a lot in his little lifetime, but he had a good heart.”

Before everyone went their separate ways, a family friend told everyone to love each other and to not have hate in their hearts.

Moreno does not want her son to be forgotten. Friday’s vigil will help his legacy live on.

“Without the community, and without everybody coming together, justice will not be served for my son," she said.

Reno Police arrested 42 year old Edward Rivas in connection with the boy’s death. Rivas faces murder and arson charges.

The family intends to hold a celebration of life October 3 at Idlewild Park. The celebration is expected to start at 1 pm.

If you want to help Moreno and her family during this time with monetary donations, you can do so at their Go Fund Me page here.
