Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful to host annual river cleanup
According to organizers the group scaled down on operations this year because of the pandemic.
RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful (KTMB) will have its annual river cleanup Saturday. According to KTMB’s Sophie Butler, the group scaled down on operations this year because of COVID-19.
KTMB will have half the volunteers this year, but Butler said that’s not stopping them from collecting trash. Last year KTMB collected 50 tons of waste. Butler is hoping to reach that number this year, if not more.
She said 400 volunteers will clean along the Truckee river corridor, plant new trees, and get rid of invasive weeds. Butler said they’re expecting a lot more trash this year.
“We think that there will be more trash, along those sections of the river because of the pandemic this year.” She added, “Everybody has been outside and it was sort of a mad dash to find places to recreate and we want to make sure the river is taken care after that.”
Volunteer spots have been taken, but KTMB is accepting monetary donations. The money will help with the organization’s mission.
