Driver trapped in power pole crash
RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - A rollover accident in Spanish Springs Friday morning sent one man to the hospital with critical injuries and cut power to 160 households.
It began at about 9:30 with a three car minor accident at Pyramid Way and Calle De La Plata. One driver--thought to be the cause of the accident--got out of his vehicle, asked if the others were all right, got back in his pickup and sped off.
Some distance down Calle De La Plata he lost control, left the roadway and crashed into a power pole.
Christopher Little, who lives nearby heard the crash. "I just heard two explosions and saw a bunch of emergency vehicles heading up this way. I went to see what had happened because our power had been kicked off a little bit.”
Another neighbor named Dennis summoned help. “I saw a big flash of light when the transformers exploded. I just started running for my truck because I knew something had happened and I called 9-1-1.”
Emergency vehicles arrived to find a seriously injured man and a difficult problem, he was trapped by live wires draped on the wreckage.
“We couldn’t get him out of the vehicle until power was de-energized to that pole," said Washoe Sheriff’s spokeswoman Sarah Johns.
So NV Energy dispatched a crew to the scene.. With the power off the man was pulled from the wreckage and transported by Care Flight. His injuries were described as critical. Those involved in the initial crash elected to transport themselves to be checked out. Their injuries--if any--were thought to be minor.
The investigation is continuing and so power is still off for about 160 customers.. An NV Energy spokesperson says it should be back on by 7 tonight.
