Volunteers of America’s Operation Backpack goes virtual, monetary donations only
The goal is to reach $25,000 to purchase backpacks and school supplies for low income families in Washoe County.
RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - Volunteers of America’s (VOA) Operation Backpack program has gone virtual this year due to the pandemic. Operation Backpack will only accept monetary donations online. The goal is to reach $25,000 to purchase backpacks and school supplies for low income families in Washoe County.
According to VOA’s Linda Grace, VOA needs the community’s help more than ever this year. COVID-19 has presented many challenges to children and families everywhere. Grace said it is especially difficult for those living in transition and in low-income communities. “People aren’t really thinking about the school supplies, they are thinking about putting food on the table.”
Organizers said the classrooms might look different this year, but the need for supplies is greater than ever. Grace said, “Every little supply that we can help with the families, to ease the burdens that they are facing financially this year, just to help a child get back to school with the most urgent supplies that they need.”
Community members can start their own virtual campaign or people can make individual contributions.
The last day to donate is July 31st. Organizers will deliver the supplies to local schools in August.
