RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - Many local restaurants have closed their doors for good because of the coronavirus. But one Reno restaurant and bakery says it sees the future differently.

Rounds Bakery says the recipe cards have been shuffled.

Reno resident Katherine Viragh shows us her number one reason for coming to Rounds Bakery. “CROUGHNUTS!!” she says as she shows us the plastic container filled with the doughnut croissant cross. Word the bakery is closing its retail sales at this location on Moana Lane is a disappointing sign of the times.

“I feel empathy for the business owners,” says Katherine. “They sunk a lot of money heart and soul into these endeavors, and they have to close up. It is the fiber of who we are here in Northern Nevada--small businesses,” she says. The owners here did what they could over the last couple of months. Pre-packaged their meals and provided customers with self-checkout.

But they say the business model for retail sales could not be sustained. “And so we are going to take the next few months, the rest of this pandemic to really start to put together an excellent, bold, forward thinking industry leading plan for when this restaurant is bigger stronger, and better than ever,” says Sean Cary, co-owner of Rounds Bakery. Sean says he is putting the retail business on hold for now.

Instead Rounds will focus on commercial sales. Doing so has allowed Rounds to retain its 50 employees with benefits.

Meanwhile he and his partner will work on a business plan to come up with a new kind of restaurant and retail sales design made to fit these times of COIVD. One that is welcoming, comfortable, and safe for both customer and staff alike.

Sean says the last day Rounds will be serving retail customers is July 17. After that they will be moving to a commercial bakery on USA Parkway.

But he says that isn’t the end of the story.

Stay tuned he says.
