The Diamondbacks have traded Aces' shortstop Pedro Ciriaco to the Pirates in a five-player deal that sends former Wolf Pack player Ryan Church to Arizona.

The trade was first reported by Fox Sports.

Arizona shipped catcher Chris Snyder, Ciriaco and $3 million to PIttsburgh in exchange for Church, D.J. Carrasco and Bobby Crosby. The move by the Diamondbacks is part of what seems to be a continuing effort to shed payroll. Snyder had more than $8 million remaining on his contract through 2011.

The deal likely means a call-up for Aces catcher John Hester, who has split time between Reno and Arizona this season.

The 24-year-old Ciriaco was ranked as the D'Backs 27th-best prospect, according to Baseball America. He was selected to represent the organization in the MLB Future's Game earlier this month in Anaheim.
