Pack Volleyball Falls in Four Sets

RENO, Nev. - The University of Nevada (10-18, 6-8 WAC) volleyball team lost a four-set Western Athletic Conference match to New Mexico State University (17-8, 12-3 WAC) on Thursday night.

RENO, Nev. - The University of Nevada (10-18, 6-8 WAC) volleyball team lost a four-set Western Athletic Conference match to New Mexico State University (17-8, 12-3 WAC) on Thursday night.

The loss drops the Wolf Pack to 10-18 on the season and 6-8 in WAC play while second place Aggies improved to 17-8 overall and 12-3 in conference play.

There were 12 ties and five lead changes in set one in which the Pack prevailed 25-23. With the set tied at 23-23 Nevada go the benefit of a service error and then junior Kylie Harrington’s kill off an assist from senior setter Sonnie Sei ended the first set. Nevada hit .300 in the first set and held NMSU to a .186 attack percentage.

The Aggies jumped to a 7-1 lead in set two and cruised to the 25-13 victory to even the match at a set apiece. The Pack hit negative .125 while NMSU finished with a .333 attack percentage.

Set three was tied early at 3-3 but NMSU took control with a 9-0 run to move in front 12-3 and went on to win 25-12 to take the 2-1 advantage into the locker room. Once again Nevada struggled hitting negative .161 in the second set while the Aggies hit .250.

Nevada held a 3-1 lead early in set four only to have the Aggies tie the score at 7-7 and go in front 9-7 on the way to the 25-17 set four victory and 3-1 match win. Once again the Pack hit in the negative finishing with a .031 attack percentage and NMSU hit .314.

Harrington led the Pack with 11 kills and added seven digs. Sei dished out 28 assists and libero Nicole Link tallied a match-high 13 digs.

Whitney Woods and Kayleigh Giddens had 19 and 14 kills respectively to lead NMSU. Setter Jennah Devries posted a match-high 40 kills and added 10 digs to record a double double. Libero Kelsi Phillips led the Aggies with 11 digs on the night.

For the match Nevada hit zero and the Aggies .265. NMSU totaled 17 blocks and Nevada nine. Junior Lindsay Baldwin led the Wolf Pack with seven blocks and Erin Birmingham had 10 for the Aggies.

The Pack will host Louisiana Tech on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. in final home match of the season. Prior to the start seniors Lauren Kelly (Reno), Sei (Loyalton, Calif.) and Jorgan Staker (Taylorsville, Utah) will be honored for their contributions to Nevada volleyball the past four seasons.
