BOULDER CITY, Nev. (AP) - Authorities say a thunderstorm that caused 5-foot-tall waves on Lake Mead sunk at least one boat and prompted 11 rescues.
Rangers say the storm began a little before 4 p.m. Tuesday and prompted 70 calls for distress. Authorities say one rescue involved a woman in her 30s who was stuck in the middle of the lake without a life jacket and had to tread water for three hours.
Officials with the National Park Service say they had a scare after one group was unaccounted for as of 10:30 p.m. and wasn't responding to cellphone calls. Police teams searching by air were also unable to locate the group.
But rangers report that they had safely returned to the shore by midnight.
