ADAIRSVILLE, Ga. (AP) - The storm system that sent tornadoes through parts of the Southeast, leaving at least two people dead, is now bringing rain and frigid weather to the Northeast.

Tens of thousands of homes and businesses from Georgia to Connecticut are without power.

The storm has triggered flash floods and forced water rescues in areas outside Washington, D.C. Evacuations have been ordered in parts of Virginia and Maryland.

Authorities in Rhode Island say gusting winds blew the roof off a building in Central Falls. In upstate New York, a wind gust of 63 miles an hour was recorded in the Finger Lakes region, as temperatures plunged from the cold air mass creeping up behind the front.

Forecasters say snow is possible from the Great Lakes to the Northeast.

To the south, some of the fiercest storm damage occurred in the Georgia town of Adairsville, about 60 miles northwest of Atlanta. Video footage showed an enormous funnel cloud bearing down on the town yesterday. The winds flattened homes and wiped out parts of a manufacturing plant. One person was killed when a tree crashed down on his mobile home. The other death occurred in Tennessee.
