Reno Record Dry

RENO, Nev. (AP) - The Reno-Lake Tahoe area's record dry, warm spell in December has many visitors trading skis for golf clubs.

National Weather Service forecasters say Reno ended the year with its driest December since 1883 as no rain fell during the month, and things weren't much better at Tahoe.

Tahoe City only got a trace of precipitation in December, and its 3.72 inches of precipitation over the quarter ending Saturday marked the eighth driest such period there since 1903.

Dave Laurie of the Old Brockway Golf Club on Tahoe's north shore says the lack of snow has allowed his course to stay open into January for the first time in his 20 years there, and business has been booming.

The Tahoe basin's snowpack stands at 31 percent of average for the date.
