NORTHERN NEVADA – The day after Christmas is a messy day on Northern Nevada roads.
Nevada Highway Patrol troopers tell KOLO 8 News Now they investigated 18 motor vehicle crashes in the first 10 hours of the day.
Ten of the crashes were in the Reno/Sparks area, and the other 8 were on highways in Carson, Douglas, Churchill and Lyon County areas. None of the crashes caused serious injuries.
An accident on I-80 near Virginia Street proved how valuable seat belts can be, according to NHP. A sedan had rolled onto its roof after the driver lost control. The four people inside the vehicle, including a 13-month-old toddler, escaped injury. Everyone inside was properly restrained.
NHP was also on the roads helping motorists who had slid off the roadway or spun out on an icy section of road.
Highway Patrol wants to remind all drivers to slow down when driving on wet or icy roads. You can avoid accident by increasing your following distance with other vehicles, reducing the speed of your vehicle, and allowing more time to get to your destination.
Highway surfaces are expected to thaw throughout the day but then will most likely freeze over again in the afternoon and evening when the temperatures plunge.
