Extreme Weather - May 22

The massive Gladiator Fire is still burning in Arizona's Prescott National Forest. Fire crews are slowly making progress and evacuation orders have been lifted for the town of Crown King. The Gladiator Fire started more than a week ago as a house fire, then quickly spread. It has now burned 14,000 acres north of Phoenix and destroyed six structures.

Hurricane season doesn't start until June 1st, but the first storm has already been named. Tropical storm Alberto is battering the coast of Florida but it is big enough to churn up waves off North Carolina. Alberto's sustained winds are near 40mph and little change is strength is expected. The storm should head northeastward today. Its current track will keep it off the Carolina and Georgia coast.
