We are seeing an increase recently in the number of solar flares. It is all part of the sun's normal 11 year cycle. Yesterday the sun erupted with the second largest flare of this solar cycle. NASA says that one triggered a temporary radio blackout on the sunlit side of the earth. Power outages are not out of the question today. On a nice note, we could get a glimpse of the aurora borealis (northern lights) this evening because of the solar activity. Flares should peak in late 2013.
